Waterton National Park, Canada

George Moudry | Published on 1/5/2022

While traveling in western Canada in 2015, we visited the Waterton National Park, which is the northern, and Canadian part of the Glacier National Park in NW Montana. Gwen’s sister Lynn, her husband Ian, Gwen, and I made several hikes in this stunningly beautiful place.

On one hike, we followed along the “Red Canyon”. The trail leads along the canyon on one side.

The canyon becomes deeper and narrower as we hike up. Later we crossed a narrow bridge across the canyon, and went down on the other side of the canyon.

As always, beautiful scenery surround us as we hike along....

Giant stone titans look disdainfully down upon us – tiny and temporary human motes…

Near the trail we saw several stags with antlers in velvet.

On our way back to camp, we saw a black bear. We saw this bear around our camp before: he liked to hang around the nearby horse stables and barns.

Next day Ian, Lyn and Gwen and I decided to hike the trail to the Crypt Lake, high in the mountains. This is a difficult, 16-mile hike! But first, this Miss Waterton boat will ferry us across the lake to the trailhead.

Gwen is always in a good mood when surrounded by cruel wilderness…

At couple of places, we had to climb iron ladders anchored to a stone cliff, and then crawl into and through a narrow cave.

Nice view, eh? You can see the trail that led us here: it is on the right side of this image.

Spectacular waterfall rumbles down into a stony pit. Below us are two hikers on the same trail.

After the gruesome hike, we ended up in our favorite bar, “The Thirsty Bear”. The bar served an excellent beer on tap, and wickedly hot buffalo wings. The soup of that day was “Whisky”.
